Most of us have heard of the concept of wellness, but we may not recognize what it means. We may vaguely associate it with yoga, meditation and “new age” practices that aim at healing human beings via energy and “chakras.” And although yoga and meditation have both received recognition even from the scientific community, there are other practices which remain shrouded in mystery such as healing with crystals or reiki.
Energy: Does It Really Exist?
The idea that there is some kind of free-floating energy out there which we can use to fulfill our aims can seem exciting as well as dubious. So people are generally divided into those who believe in energy and wellness and those who don’t. The fact is that unless you’ve been able to experience energy and how it works, you’re not going to believe in it.
Yoga, Meditation and Reiki
Yoga practitioners report that they inevitably feel calmer after yoga; they also work better and get along with people better. Meditation is also said to have a similar effect and reiki is said to reduce pain, relieve anxiety and make a person feel more energetic or more relaxed, depending on what they need most.
Ancient Theory of Chakras
Many of the above practices are derived from ancient Indian theories of “chakras.” “Chakra” literally means wheel, and each of us is supposed to have a number of wheels within our bodies which are constantly spinning. The main chakras are the crown chakra on top of the head, the third eye chakra on the forehead, the throat chakra, the heart chakra, the solar plexus chakra right below the heart, the sacral chakra under your belly button and the root chakra near the sexual/reproductive organs.
Balancing Your Chakras
The idea is that for your life to be complete, all your chakras have to be spinning at the right speed—not too fast and not too slow. When your chakras are spinning too fast, it’s generally because you’re spending too much time working and not enough relaxing and if your chakras are spinning too slow, it’s because of the opposite.
Consulting Your Chakras
As you can see, the chakra system makes intuitive sense even if it’s not a scientific theory. If you are, in fact, a believer in energy, you can always close your eyes and consult yourself about which of your chakras seem to be too fast or too slow and think about what you could do to reduce/increase their speed. Maybe meditation or some other type of energy practice will help to balance them out or maybe you just need some time off with your favorite book.
Effects on Life and Work
This is a method that can help you get back on track if you’re having a bad day; it can even help you to balance out your life in general by doing more of the things that seem to bring you back to center. The more you consult yourself and try to align or balance your chakras, the calmer and happier you will feel. You might even find yourself having better, more creative ideas and greater energy to carry them through.
