Human Resources: How to Avoid Being a Stagnant Leader

A big part of effective leadership is continued growth and learning. Though it is often difficult to constantly find ways to develop as a leader, effective leaders understand that they must push forward in order to avoid becoming a stagnant leader.  Displaying the willingness and ability to grow sets the example for others to follow. Stagnant leaders often display the same habits that slowly turn a skilled leader into someone who is viewed as a bad manager. A few warning signs that  show a leader is no longer engaged or in a rut include:

Concentration on failures instead of successes

Mistakes become more significant than lessons

Growth has been halted

Failure to seek challenges

Remaining in a comfort zone

If just one of the warning signs is evident in a leader, it should invoke a response. Failure of leadership to accept the need to change is detrimental to the success of any business. Even if an organization feels as though their leadership model is effective, it is still important to listen to feedback and act upon it appropriately. Further, leaders must understand that their position is more than issuing promotions. An environment of continued growth for themselves and the team must be continuously fostered.

Regardless of the type of company, there is always a risk of becoming stagnant. This is not only for those who have been leaders for some time, but for newly appointed leaders as well. Everything a leader does has a powerful effect on subordinates as well as the organization. Though the process of developing as a leader can seem difficult to undertake, it is important to realize that leaders can always be a better version of themselves. The first step is being aware of development and opportunities to improve.
