Human Resources: The Best Ways to Motivate Employees

One of the biggest challenges in  Human Resources today is making sure that the company culture motivates employees to do their best for their organization each and every day.

According to a 2013 Gallup Poll “State of the Global Workplace”, only 13% of employees worldwide were engaged at work, 63% of employees were not engaged at work, and 24% of employees in the poll were actively disengaged.

And 24% are “actively disengaged,” indicating they are unhappy and unproductive at work and liable to spread negativity to coworkers

Motivating employees to ensure that they are engaged positively with co-workers, customers, and the company as a whole is one of the most positive things that business leadership can focus on. Employee engagement initiatives can help guard against excessive employee turnover, negativity in the workplace, and the retention and engagement of the most valuable resource any company has — its people.

Employee engagement initiatives don’t have to be complicated!

  1. Make it a policy to recognize employee achievements. Does your company culture work at engaging with your employees, and celebrating those milestones and individual goals reached? Work with your Managers to make sure all teams and people have goals, are clear about how to accomplish them, and celebrate people when they hit their targets!
  2. Communicate well, and communicate often. Many employees report that they feel disengaged when they don’t know or understand what is going on, or the role their job plays in the company’s overall vision. Knock down information silos, and make sure that everyone understands the role they play in the company’s continued success. Celebrate everyone’s role, and make sure employees are aware of how important they are.
  3. Think creatively about meaningful rewards. You don’t have to break the bank to give people meaningful recognition.  Offering lunch with the boss, an unexpected afternoon off, or a little trophy for an employee’s desk can go a long way towards making an employee feel important. If you work to ensure that your company culture includes employee recognition as a priority, your employees will recognize your business for its efforts in making your organization a great place to work.
